Summer Of Service 2005 in Washington DC
June 13-18, 2005

There is only one word for this Summer of Service 2005 in the DC Metropolitan Area, AWESOME! Thirty-five service-loving volunteers gathered together for six days to experience service in multi-faceted activities.

Day 1: Internal Theme: Teamwork

Activities: Orientation, icebreakers collected from Pathmakers

Service Project: Cleaning New Hope Academy in Landover Hills , Maryland

Day 2: Internal Theme: Self Awareness and Improvement

Activities: Team building exercises in local malls (due to extreme heat)

 

Service Project: The boys renovated a basketball court and cleaned out the pool at the Youth Center in Bowie. The girls created peace frames with Global Women to raise money for scholarships for African students.

 

Day 3: Internal Theme: Leadership

Activities: Trust Exercises

Service Project: Fixed new trails and covered trails no longer in use at Greenbelt National Park in Greenbelt , Maryland

Day 4: Internal Theme: Living and Thinking for the Greater Good

Activities: Activities from Pathmakers

Service Projects: Volunteering at several sites:

Heartfields Assisted Living Center in Bowie Maryland

Inwood Independent Living Center in Silver Spring , Maryland .


New Hope Academy 's summer program for children, and created games, activities, and arts and crafts for the children.

Evening Activity: Roller Skating

Day 5: Internal Theme: Creating Peace

Activities: Team Discussions

Service Project: Volunteered with Garden Harvest

Evening Activity: Watched the movie "The Power of One"

Day 6: Internal Theme: Creating our Own Vision

Activities: Quotable Quotes

Service Project: Car Wash for Tsunami Relief Funds- raised $436 in donations
