Make a Difference Day

On Make a Difference Day, Service for Peace DC partnered with students of HYDE Leadership Public Charter School and University of Maryland for a day of service and barrier breaking!

Upon setting our goals as Service for Peace volunteers (things like getting to know to 5 new people or inspiring a spirit if service in the community) we set out to for HYDE School to beautify the area surrounding the school!

We divided into teams; each team consisting of at least 3 races and 3 different volunteer groups! College, high school, and junior high students worked sided by side along with doctors, teachers and community leaders. Truly, the project site was strewn with people of all ages and walks of life working together based upon the common goal of service, but the day held more for all of us than the simple joy of helping the community.

As diverse volunteers we worked together talking, laughing and problem solving; the day soon became as much a day of cultural exchange as a day of service. As the day progressed strangers became friends bridging the gaps between race, age and economic class! Based upon the common goal of service we learned to appreciate and respect people we might never have even met otherwise!

As we reflected together and shared lessons we recognized that through service we had inspired not only each other but also many community members. People from the area had even joined with some of our work teams! We as Service for Peace, HYDE School and University of Maryland students look forward to working together again in the near future!
