National Youth Service Day 2004
April 17, 2004
Saturday
On National Youth Service Day 30 youth members from the Brookland Manor Teen Center in North East Washington DC and Service for Peace created a Memorial Garden on the grounds of Brookland Manor Apartments to remember 21 youth from the property killed in gun violence. The memorial will be a place of healing for the victim's friends and family.
The Memorial Garden Project provided an avenue for youth to channel their feelings and memories of lost friends creatively to design a project that would tell the story of violence while giving hope for a brighter future.
Throughout the project youth addressed the need for greater community awareness and reflected on ways they as individuals can create a healthier community.
The final part of the project consisted of planting bushes and flowers arranged around a cross designed by the youth. Upon completion youth dedicated the Garden to their fallen friends and held a youth violence "mini summit" sharing and discussing the problems of violence and action plans to prevent further violence related deaths.
Ongoing projects are planned to address and provide programs related to violence and violence related social problems .
