Baltimore Serve-A-Thon Project June 7th, 2003 The Baltimore Public School Project by Tongil Moran On June 7th, we went to the Furman Templeton Elementary School to help with cleaning and painting as part of the Baltimore Serve-a-Thon. The volunteer site was also part of the Culture of Service Conference sponsored by the Points of Light Foundation. This was my first time being in a Baltimore public school and I hadn't realized how less fortunate they are. We worked with AmeriCorps and youths from the neighborhood. It was good working with the other groups. It was rainy and I didn't feel like working so much, but because they were there I didn't want to give Service for Peace a bad name, so I decided to forget about the rain and ended up having a good experience. Our main job during the project was to paint the doors around the school, which wasn't so bad because I enjoy painting. At the end they needed me to help clean up the back of the school. There we found cigarettes, crack vials, and needles. I was so shocked to find that kind of stuff behind an elementary school. After doing the project I realized how lucky I am.

On June 7, 2003 I joined three other Service for Peace members in a service project held in Baltimore by Volunteer Central, another service organization. We went to Holabird Elementary school to paint the halls and classrooms. We also painted a mural along side the stairway. Towards the end, the mayor of Baltimore, the Honorable Martin O'Malley, came to visit us. He helped on the mural alongside 15 other volunteers. I had a good time at the service project working with many different groups from the area. As I painted the classrooms I really felt the need to help these young students and through that I had a great experience.
