Simon Elementary Habitat Project - 2nd Phase

June 26th, 2003

Service for Peace volunteers have continued to work on the nature habitat clearing brush and removing silt from the stream. We progressed quite a bit but we haven't been able to finish everything. Dewayne Hudson from Outdoor Creations invited us to come back once more at the beginning of the new school year.

Since we've been here from the beginning I am sure we will not miss out on the last phase...

Simon Elementary Habitat Project

Report by Norbert Szolnoky

In spite of the gloomy weather 25 volunteers gathered to start the work on this nature habitat benefiting the Simon Elementary School students. The project's main sponsor was Outdoor Creations, a local non-profit environmental organization that provides students with hands on education to enhance their skills and build confidence. This planned habitat was definitely in line with that purpose envisioning a stream and a wetland, a garden, a trail and even a small wooded area with trees for the children to learn about the environment right in their backyard.

Dewayne Hudson, President of Outdoor Creations welcomed all the participants and introduced the project. We formed small groups to take care of all the tasks then went to work. While one group was cleaning up all the trash, others were removing invasive vegetations on the hillside and silt in the stream. It was a hard work but we also took time to talk and get to know each other. I am always amazed how working together with someone opens you up and helps you to find things out about that person that otherwise you wouldn't know.

Volunteers shovel away dirt and weeds from a streamBy the end of the day we not only made a big difference but got a good work-out and made some good friends. There's still a lot to be done to complete this initial phase of the project and I am sure that we will back soon to keep building this dream.
