Start the Change-
Bridging Campus and Community through Service
Last summer 50 youth lead by college students from the Austin area engaged in Summer of Service- a 10 day concentrated volunteer service program with a service learning focus (see Summer of Service Leader Training and Summer of Service 2004, to the right). Their dedication and hard work earned them the title "rock stars of volunteers." Through hands-on service complimented with service learning exercises, students experienced how volunteer service can transform not only those served but also those serving, and gained concrete volunteer education and community outreach skills. The end verdict: college students wanted to do more.
College students engaging in Summer of Service across the country wanted to take their experiences of service back to their colleges campuses.
The result: Gen S (Generation Serve); the new college club initiative focused on creating a campus culture of service thereby bridging the gap between campus and community.
New volunteers from colleges aross Austin are invited to join in service projects hosted by Gen S at Univeristy of Texas to create a campus culture of service. For information on how you can become involved call (512) 833-7298 or e-mail. lbrewer@serviceforpeace.org |
