Washington, DC MLK Day of Service
Service for Peace partnered with the Brookland Manor Boys and Girls Club, Hyde Leadership Public Charter School and Red Cross Disaster Resistance Neighborhood Team of the National Capital Area to provide emergency preparedness kits and disaster readiness information and training for the senior and shut in residents of Brookland Manor Apartments . Volunteers also delivered personal necessity kits and helped with household chores to further serve the senior residents.
Volunteers came from across the DC Metro area including students from Howard University , George Mason University , University of Maryland College Park , Eastern Senior High School , Roosevelt High School and Hyde Charter School . AmeriCorps and CitizenCorps staff and volunteers were also present to help throughout the project. Staff from the DC Commission on National and Community Service also helped to assemble and deliver 200 kits for the senior residents at the Brookland Manor complex.
Highlights of the day included words of support from Mrs. Tess Scannell, Director of SeniorCorps programs for the Corporation for National and Community Service and valuable emergency information was provided by Mrs. Barbara Childs-Pair, Acting Director of the DC Emergency Management Agency. On hand to make special deliveries were DC Mayor Anthony Williams and Former Redskins Star and Chairman of the President's Council on Service and Civic Participation Mr. Darrell Green.
