Kids get back-to-school backpacks in Louisville, Kentucky

SFP Volunteers Receive Honors for Their Work in an After-School Program
Five students from the University of Bridgeport in Bridgeport, Connecticut, were honored recently for their efforts with an after school program called Unique and Unified. Representing Service For Peace in this endeavor, the students spent time with children at Marina Village, a family complex, in Bridgeport’s South End, assisting younger children with reading and tutoring programs.

US Chapter Plans Major Projects for 2008
Through three main targeted projects, Service For Peace (SFP) is piloting five major expansion locations (Chicago, IL; Miami, FL; Louisville, KY; Washington DC; and Fairfield County, CT) to promote 40,000 volunteers towards meaningful service projects and transformational learning experiences throughout the 2008 year. The major project components are: Communities of Peace, Partners for Peace, and Project Peace.

The good news continues, and this time it comes from the US Agency for International Development (USAID). In late August, Service For Peace received a letter of acceptance of SFP’s application to join the ranks of Private Voluntary Organizations that are qualified to apply for grants from USAID.

SFP Granted Consultative Status with ECOSOC
Service For Peace received more good news in June. On the last scheduled day of its 2008 session, the Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations of the UN's Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) decided to recommend SFP and 11 other civil-society groups for consultative status with the Council. SFP was awarded special status which means that SFP staff members can attend Council meetings and circulate statements.

Ceremony of the completion of 40 houses with heating system
November 23 was a very significant day for the South Korean chapter of Service For Peace. On that day, in the village of Keum Cheon Ri, North Korea, 30 SFP volunteers gathered together with 10 members of the North Korean government to celebrate the completion of 40 new houses, complete with heating systems.

Service For Peace Celebrates International Volunteer Day
The International Volunteer Day was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1985. Since then, governments, the UN system and civil society organizations have joined volunteers around the world to celebrate the Day on 5 December. This year, when so many of the world’s conflicts and tensions are related to religious differences, Service For Peace decided to focus on projects that would bring together people of different faiths. UN Approves Service For Peace Application
In late July, the SFP National Office received very welcome news from the United Nations. Juan Carlos Brandt, Chief of the NGO Section of the UN’s Department of Public Information (UNDPI) informed SFP Board Chairperson Heather Thalheimer that SFP's application to be associated with the Department had been approved by the Committee on NGOs.

Service For Peace is one of many distinguished service organizations in the United States who have joined the Organizing Committee of the ServiceNation - Be the Change, Inc. national effort to make service part of every citizen's life in the United States. ServiceNation is a campaign where citizens unite and take responsibility for the American nation’s future. This campaign will launch with a ServiceNation Summit, Sept. 11-12, 2008 in New York City, and build with a national grassroots movement aimed at inspiring widespread public support for a new and transformational National Service Act that will encourage all Americans to step forward and take the lead in bridging our divides, strengthening our communities, and building a more vibrant democracy. |
