Empowering Communities

Community development is the foundation for all Service For Peace programs, initiatives, partnerships, and volunteer activities. It is our belief that community development should be an inclusive and long-term process that requires both internal and external support.

Through our programs, we seek to transform people’s attitudes toward themselves, toward their fellow citizens and toward their communities. Community resilience and development depends on the attitudes and behavior of the members of the community; as residents must cooperate to identify and work toward common goals.  SFP therefore makes a long term commitment to communities. We work with the community members and their leaders to find solutions to specific development issues. As communities become accustomed to working together to address common goals, their resiliency is naturally strengthened. The skills, knowledge and experience that they gain through cooperative action to improve their quality of life are extremely valuable when they face unexpected challenges and potential disaster.
