Our Approach

Service For Peace collaborates with partner communities in the Dominican Republic to address significant development issues. In doing so, we adopt an approach that is often referred to as Community Based Development (CBD). It is very different to the idea of massive amounts of foreign aid being provided by developed nations.

Poor and marginalized people have often been viewed as the target of poverty reduction efforts but the CBD approach turns this perception on its head and treats communities and their institutions as assets and partners in the search for solutions to their development challenges.

Service for Peace believes that effective community development has to be community based. In addition to our ongoing local projects led by our local teams in together with our partner communities, we coordinate safe, meaningful, affordable, and fun international service opportunities volunteer groups. Service For Peace utilizes a unique approach towards cross-cultural community development in which we equally prioritize the rich and genuine experience of volunteers with the sustainable and collaborative development of our long-term partner communities in which we work.

SFP has found that the ongoing engagement with a community by our local staff, combined with the involvement of international volunteers, creates a momentum within the community and a strong sense of optimism about the prospect of bringing about real, sustainable improvements.
